Pastor Steven Furtick of Elevation Church has started a new series that im beyond excited about “Mood Swingers”….mainly because it deals with emotions and being in control of them all. I made a blog entry some days back titled Stop Beating Yourself Up! Its about allowing yourself to feel whatever emotions you need to feel but not allowing those emotions to control you…which is basically what Pastor Steven spoke about. God’s idea of us living a life that’s appealing to him is to be in control of our emotions. “Happiness is not a destination, but it is a path that is connected to God’s word and conversion with God’s word” – Steven Furtick > If we are connected to God by his word and then changed because of those words…we will learn to control our emotions.

Steven Furtick listed 3 things we need to do in order for this to happen:


1. Guard your Heart – “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” Proverbs 4:23 NIV Be careful of the things and people you expose yourself to, because it can be toxic to your heart and mind which will in turn destroy your entire being if given the chance.

2. Own your emotions – Whatever you’re feeling whether it be sadness/discouragement…own it, refrain from casting the blame on someone else, be responsible with what you’re feeling and say “I feel so and so…”. King David would always own his emotions, he at times would start off by questioning himself about why he’s feeling a certain way, he wouldn’t ignore it but instead would find a way to control that emotion. “Why are you so downcast, oh my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior, my God.” Psalms 42:11

3. Change your concentration – Ive realized this in my own life and i’ve had to put it into practice during this week. Not everything that we enjoy doing is always beneficial to us…I love watching the TV, but if i’m not being careful…i’ll watch it all day everyday and do nothing else, i’ll even watch shows that are fun to watch but then I end up feeling drained or depressed. Changing your concentration can also mean…change what you’re thinking about. At times we think about things that aren’t relevant or helpful to us….what it does is mess with our emotions and our health, so it can’t be a good thing…instead fix your eyes on what is noble and what is good…things that’ll uplift you instead of leaving you in utter despair.

Sometimes its not our circumstance that needs changing, but our concentration (thoughts).
